The Financial Review Rich List for 2026 is out. The combined wealth of Australia’s top 200 has risen by $39 billion in a single year to reach $707 billion. Gina Rinehart holds top spot for the seventh year running at an estimated $39 billion. Nearly nine in ten on the list are now billionaires.

The fortunes that dominate the rankings share a common thread: decades of concentrated exposure to a single sector, held through multiple cycles. Mining, property and commodities have compounded quietly over very long-time horizons. Ivan Glasenberg’s estimated wealth jumped from $13 billion to $22.4 billion in a year, largely on the back of strong commodities. Harry Triguboff has compounded through Sydney property for generations.

What the list also shows is the rotation that happens below the surface. Tech fortunes pulled back this year, with billions wiped from listed software businesses. Canva’s Melanie Perkins and Cliff Obrecht are an exception at sixth on $17.6 billion, but the broader cohort has had a harder run. Sector leadership reflects the cycle as much as the individual.

The lesson most worth taking from the Rich List is not about concentration. It is about time horizon and patience. The families who appear on this list, year after year, are not reacting to markets. They are sitting through them. That same discipline – patient capital, long time horizons and a clear plan built for multiple cycles is at the heart of how we work with families at Newealth. If you would like to talk through how your investment strategy is positioned for the years ahead, we would be glad to hear from you.
